Surviving the MAC Attack
by Chuck Wilson
 |
Just imagine: you’re sitting in class hungry as all get out and you can’t wait to get out of school so you can get your grub on. And all of a sudden the idea of a Big Mac, or any fast food, sounds so good you would be willing trade your new IPOD for it – well, not really but that’s how hungry you feel. That’s when you realize you’re having a “Mac Attack”! A Mac Attack is a strong urge to eat something that’s greasy, tastes good and unfortunately not very healthy. A Big Mac, fries and a cold pop are examples of Mac Attack foods. |
Mac Attacks tend to creep up when 1. We’re in a hurry; 2. We’re hanging out with our friends; or 3. We’re very HUNG-GRAY – now let me say there’s a big difference between being “hungry” and being “hung-gray”. When you are “hung-gray” you will eat almost anything that’s cheap, fast, and filling.
The problem with giving in to the Mac Attack every time is that it could become a bad habit. And we know the old saying about bad habits: They’re easy to start and hard to break. Now, am I saying that you should never eat fast food or that you should never eat a Big Mac? NOPE. I’m only saying that if you learn good eating habits while you’re young, you’re more likely to have good eating habits throughout your whole life.
How do you survive the Mac Attack? Preparation and moderation are the keys. Listed below are ways to enjoy the occasional trip to your favorite fast food joint without sacrificing your health:
- SLOW your roll. When you scarf down your food you tend to eat more. This is especially true when you’re hurrying to get somewhere or hurrying to do something. Try to eat slowly. Your digestive system will thank you – by sparing you the tummy ache that usually follows quick eating. “. . . therefore honor God with your body.” I Corinthians 6:20 NIV
- SHARE a meal. This is a good tip when you’re low on funds. Ask a friend or whomever you’re out with if they would like to share or split a meal. You’ll eat less and save some money. “. . . no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.” Acts 4:32 NIV
- Be PREPARED. Eat something healthy before you go out. This will help you feel full and keep you from making a bad eating decision while you’re out.
“ . . . No mind has conceived what God has prepared for those that love him.” I Corinthians 2:9 NIV
There you have it. Your own survival guide to overcoming the Mac Attack.
