Chapter Once: Loves Moment

He awakens by the alarm clock that reads 7:02 am realizing that if he can get through today the weekend is near. With one more glance in the mirror, he tightens his baseball cap on his head and thinks to himself this is the best he’s going to look.

Headed down the Lodge Freeway, to Wayne State University, he rehearses the words in his head for the 10:00 presentation, but soon the words are interrupted with the replays of the conversations they had.

It’s been a year and he still remembers every accusation, every apology, every misunderstanding. The anguish of remembering forces a tear that is quickly wiped away with his strong hand.

Heading into the building he is reminded of his boy’s birthday and how much she loves the French vanilla cappuccino from across the street. Swiftly bobbing the traffic of pedestrians and taxis he approaches the window and spots her.

She is exactly how he remembers her. At that instant he realizes love won’t be able to rescues him from the fear of the encounter.

Standing outside admiring her, she gently pulls her hair behind her ear and smiles at his caress of her cheek. Goodbyes are exchanged and as he exits she stands at his attention only to fix his hat the exact way she used to fix his.

He is numb, motionless, consumed in the perplexity of loves moment. So consumed he didn’t hear the gentleman’s request.

He repeats, “excuse me, do you have the time?” He takes off his cap, looks straight past the man and replies “8:56.” He goes to class cappuccino less and sits quietly starring out the window in the small desk, when his boy Jonathan enters.

While Jonathan is giving high lights from the churches basketball game that he couldn’t make because he had to prepare for the presentation, he is focused on the reminder of her out the window.

onathan stops and immediately figures out what happened…

“Dog, you saw her didn’t you?”

“Yeah, I saw her.”
